Socrates-Grundtvig 1.1 project
CONTENT
OF NEWSLETTER NR 2
One week refresher courses with colleagues from all over Europe
?
And finding a solution to a tough problem? Travel, accomodation
and training paid by the EC commission?
Is this something for you? If it is, read this newsletter. If it
is not, destroy it and keep messing around!
DEAR READER,
Are
you a teacher? In that case, you must have been irritated
hundreds of time by the spelling errors of pupils or students.
Do you have a job in a personnel sector? Then you have
certainly been confronted with personnel obstinately refusing
in-service training, even if this excluded them from all
promotion opportunities.
Are you working in basic or adult education? Then you
must daily come across adults strugggling with writing, reading
and calculating.
Are you a job coach or traject assistant of
long-time unemployed persons? In that case, you very well know
that an insufficient command of the language results in failure
of all education, and is also an enormous obstacle in finding
employment.
Are you involved in an organisation for dyslexia? Then
you must realise that the above mentioned problems are often a
consequence of dyslexia.
Dyslexia is a learning disorder with a lot of gradations,
forms and definitions. The assimilation of information in the
dyslexic brain takes place differently than in other brains. It
is not only a question of reading and writing.
Although dyslexia can be treated, it will never disap pear, but
you can ëlearn to liveí with it.
WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT?
With an adapted training, dyslexics can not only live
with their restrictions, but even succeed in their studies and
careers.
A lot of brilliant people were indeed dyslexic, but were able to
defeat their restriction and turn it into an advantage.
Therefore though, understanding and help from the
environment is necessary. And it is a pity that dyslexia is
still unknown by many teachers, instructors, job assistants and
personnel services.
Many adult dyslexics were not recognised as such when at
school, let alone being helped. Several of them are not aware of
their dyslexia. In most cases, they ascribe their problems to
their own incompetence or even stupidity. Of course, this kills
their self-confidence and self-image.
Thus, dyslexics run the risk of being excluded from our knowledge
society. Often they try to h ide their problems and
keep silent about them, when applying for a job or at their
work, although a few minimal adaptations are sufficient to make
dyslexics function better at their jobs.
But therefore someone must lay his finger on the spot and
provide the first help. Do you feel this is a task for
you, but donít you know how to begin ?
